ch 7. Genital herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).This first outbreak usually happens within 2 days to 2 weeks of being infected.

Genital herpes is a highly contagious infectious disease that is transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person. 

  1. HSV-2 most often causes genital herpes. HSV-2 can be spread through secretions from the mouth or genitals.Genital HSV-2 infections are more common in women than men.
  2. HSV-1 usually affects the mouth and lips and causes cold sores or fever blisters. However, it can spread from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex.

    Caused by Herpes Virus Type 1

    Specimen should be taken for diagnosis Herpes Virus Type 1

     

Symptoms:

Women Men
  1. Sores inside or near the vagina, the vulva, the cervix, on the external genitals, near the anus or on the thighs or buttocks
  2. Tender lumps in the groin
  3. Some women may develop recurrent outbreaks before or during their menstrual cycles
  4. Fever, headaches and muscular pain
  1. Sores on the penis, around the testicles, near the anus or on the thighs or buttocks
  2. Tender lumps in the groin
  3. Anal pain or discharge
  4. Fever, headaches and muscular pain
